A Cinematic, Book-Lined Wedding at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh

Some venues feel like stepping into another world, and The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh is undoubtedly one of them.

For N & D, it was the perfect place to celebrate their love - an elegant sanctuary of mahogany shelves, historic reading rooms, grand staircases, and that warm, unmistakable scent of old books and polished wood.

As a documentary wedding photographer specialising in real, intimate, and cinematic photography, this small and close knot wedding was a dream to capture.

The History of the Royal College of Physicians

Founded in 1681, the Royal College of Physicians stands at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, carrying centuries of academic heritage within its walls. The building is a spectacular fusion of Georgian and Victorian architecture, filled with rich colours, high ceilings, and a sense of intellectual grandeur. Rows of antique books wrap around the rooms, their spines glowing in deep reds, greens, and golds - an atmosphere unlike any other for a wedding.

N & D chose the venue for precisely these qualities: the warmth, the history, and the way every room feels like it holds a thousand stories. As soon as I walked in, I knew their day would photograph beautifully.

The Ceremony: Book Lined Shelves & Warm Sconce Glow

The ceremony unfolded in the Royal College of Physicians New Library. Skylights above let in a gentle Edinburgh light, while the dark wood, and shelves of books surrounding us, created a sense of intimacy that wrapped around the room like a hug.

Photographing N & D’s ceremony was a joy - rich tones, emotional glances, and the kind of closeness only a meaningful venue can inspire. I focused on real, unposed moments, letting my documentary style guide every frame. as I knew N & D were not ones for photographs. The result? Images that feel lived-in, emotional, and deeply connected.

Cinematic Portraits Among Books and Marble Halls

After the ceremony, we wandered through the building for portraits. The Royal College of Physicians is a treasure trove of dramatic staircases, towering bookshelves, marble columns, and pockets of glowing light. I used both wide cinematic compositions and intimate close-ups to show the scale of the venue and the softness of N & D’s connection.

Every corridor felt like a movie set. Every shadow, every beam of natural light added depth and storytelling. This is the heart of how I work - capturing wedding portraits that feel like scenes rather than poses.

Why Edinburgh Is Perfect for Intimate Weddings and Elopements

N & D’s day was a reminder of why I encourage so many couples to elope or plan intimate weddings in Edinburgh. The city breathes romance - historic architecture, dramatic closes, leafy gardens, libraries, galleries, and hidden corners that make every photograph feel cinematic. No matter the season, Edinburgh is a beautiful place to get married.

If you’re dreaming of a celebration that’s warm, meaningful, and rich with atmosphere, Edinburgh truly has no equal. Whether in a library like the Royal College, on Calton Hill at sunrise, or tucked into the cobblestone alleys of Old Town, the city is made for storytelling.
