Òran Mór Glasgow Wedding; romantic, dark, moody & everything in-between...

When J, who runs the 'Witchy Wedding Fayre' here in Scotland reached out to me to capture her wedding I just knew I had to do it. Talk of wedding photographs down Ashton Lane and in the local cinema. An old gothic venue in the form of Oran Mor. Glasgow Botanical Gardens next door for some evening sunset photography. A photographer's playground!

The wedding was going to be a celebration of everything that made J & R unique, kind of gothic and emo, very much into photography and film, quirky, sexy, funny. A day that needed both a hands off, documentary style photography approach to let their natural family moments breathe and come into existent and then at other times strong guidance to get the editorial, movie like photographs of their dreams for their couples portraits. I think, we struck the right balance. And Oran Mor was the most perfect, versatile backdrop for all of this to unfold.

A Cinematic Wedding at Òran Mór by Scotland Wedding Photographer

Some wedding venues have a way of making you feel something the moment you walk through the doors. Òran Mór is one of those places.

Nestled in the heart of Glasgow's West End, this iconic former church offers a wedding experience unlike anywhere else in Scotland. With its stunning architecture, rich history, dramatic interiors, and unique space, it provides the perfect backdrop for couples who want their wedding photographs to feel timeless, emotional, and deeply personal.

As a Scotland wedding and elopement photographer, my approach has always been rooted in connection rather than perfection. My motto is simple: I photograph feelings.

This beautiful wedding at Òran Mór was a perfect example of why that philosophy matters.

Òran Mór; a wedding venue in Glasgow's West End with many possibilities

The best thing about being a documentary style photographer in Scotland is getting to see so many weddings that all have unique styles and elements individual and unique to the couple getting married. Often, this can happen at the same venue. The venue can be at one wedding dark, romantic and gothic. At another, light, grand, and luxury. Oran Mor, and its situation in Glasgow's West End, is a venue that can lend itself to many aesthetics. As a 35mm film photographer and often Edinburgh wedding photographer I love the gritty alleyways surrounding Oran Mor that are such a beautiful contrast to the elevated look of couples on wedding days. I love that there can be playfulness in the local area with wedding photographs in pubs and cinemas a definitely possibility. And I love that with the green space of Glasgow Botanical Gardens wedding photographs can be classical, traditional, and nature filled.

The venue itself has lots of interesting pockets of light, stained glass windows, gothic doors and archways that make for beautiful wedding photograph opportunities throughout the ceremony or afterwards too. Using the light to play with shadows for a darker and moodier look or the stained glass for pops of colour can really differentiate weddings held here at Oran Mor.

Creating Something Different in the Cinema

One of the highlights of the day was taking portraits inside the Grosvenor cinema along Ashton Lane. The soft darkness of the space created a completely different mood from the rest of the venue. The cinematic atmosphere allowed us to create images that felt intimate, dramatic, and deeply personal.

They sat close, shared stories, laughed quietly, and forgot about the camera altogether at times and at others took on strong direction from me to achieve the portraits that they really wanted.

The result was a collection of photographs that felt less like traditional wedding portraits and more like stills from a beautiful film. Images full of emotion, connection, and authenticity. But most importantly the fun and quirkiness that represented the couple at the heart of them.

As a cinematic wedding photographer in Scotland, I’m always searching for ways to tell a story rather than simply document events. The cinema space provided the perfect setting to create something truly unique while still remaining faithful to the real emotions unfolding in front of me.

A Walk Through the Glasgow Botanic Gardens

After spending time back at Òran Mór for a speeches, wedding bingo and a delicious dinner, we made our way to the nearby Glasgow Botanic Gardens as the DJ set up for the evening dancing.

The gardens provide a beautiful contrast to the gothic ambience of Òran Mór and the sultry shadows of the cinema photographs. A more traditional wedding portrait if you will! The lush greenery, winding pathways, and peaceful atmosphere create an opportunity for couples to step away from the excitement of the day and simply spend time together once it has all sunk in.

Why Feeling Matters More Than Posing

When couples choose me as their Scotland wedding photographer, they're not booking someone to create a series of perfectly posed images. They're investing in a storyteller.

Someone who notices the quiet moments.

Someone who understands that the most meaningful photographs are often the ones that happen naturally.

BUT, someone who also knows how to direct and pose to tell the story you want to tell. This always comes from deep discussions together about what you want from your gallery. How you want to feel looking back on it. It's ok to want completely documentary, natural, candid photography. But it is also more thank ok to want portraits that are directed to tell a specific story, posed to get your best angle. And that's why I truly believe my style of being a cinematic documentary style photographer is the best combination of both words.

My goal is never to interrupt the experience of your wedding day. Instead, I blend into the background and document the genuine emotions unfolding around me and to elevate the moments we've pre-discussed you're happy for me to step into a director's role for.

Because long after the wedding day is over, your photographs become your memories.

And your photographs should make you feel like you're reliving it all.

Looking for a Scotland Wedding and Elopement Photographer?

Whether you're planning a wedding at Òran Mór, an intimate Glasgow celebration, or an adventurous Scottish elopement in the Highlands, my approach remains the same.

I photograph feelings.

Through a blend of cinematic storytelling, documentary observation, and timeless 35mm film photography, I create images that allow you to relive not only how your wedding looked but how it felt. If you're dreaming of wedding photographs that are authentic, emotional, and deeply personal, I'd love to hear your story.
