A Cinematic Love Story in the Heart of the City
There are some wedding days that feel effortless from start to finish - calm, joyful, and centred around the people who matter most. That’s exactly how this beautiful celebration at The Edinburgh Grand unfolded.
Located in the heart of Edinburgh, this iconic building blends historic architecture with modern elegance, making it one of the most stylish places in the city for an intimate wedding.
With its grand interiors, city views, and central location, it’s an incredible venue for couples looking to celebrate with family while still enjoying the atmosphere of one of Scotland’s most historic cities.
As a documentary style wedding and elopement photographer here in Scotland, I’m always drawn to weddings that feel relaxed and authentic. My photography style is cinematic yet documentary in nature, focused on capturing real moments and genuine emotion as the day unfolds naturally.

Getting Ready at The Edinburgh Grand
The building’s luxury apartments provide beautiful spaces for couples and their families to get ready before the ceremony. On this particular morning, the atmosphere was calm and full of quiet anticipation.
Natural light poured through the large windows, illuminating the elegant interiors while family members moved between rooms helping with last-minute preparations. There’s something incredibly special about these quieter moments before the ceremony begins - the laughter between siblings (who force you to drink whisky in the bath), the hugs from parents, and the deep breath before stepping out the door and heading towards the Edinburgh City Chambers for the legal ceremony.
This is where my documentary style of wedding photography comes into its own. Rather than directing or staging moments, I simply observe and capture what’s already happening. These real interactions often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire day.
Cinematic Wedding Photography at the City Chambers
One of the advantages of getting married in central Edinburgh is the incredible variety of photo locations just on your doorstep. Edinburgh is filled with dramatic architecture, historic streets and beautiful viewpoints that naturally lend themselves to cinematic wedding photography and the City Chambers is no exception.
As a documentary style wedding photographer, I’m always looking for ways to blend the atmosphere of a place with the emotion of the moment whilst ensuring couples don't feel overly stressed about having their photograph taken. During the ceremony is easy, I just quietly document from the sidelines. But portraits of the newly weds? A little more difficult.
Rather than treating portraits as a formal photoshoot, I encourage couples to simply walk together, talk, and enjoy the experience. The result is a set of images that feel natural and relaxed - more like moments in time than posed wedding photographs.
You see the couple laughing together as they walk through the city streets, pausing to take in the views or sharing a quiet moment away from the group.
These are the kinds of moments that truly tell the story of a wedding day.
Exploring Edinburgh in a Vintage Red Wedding Bus
One of the most memorable parts of the day was travelling through the city on the wonderfully unique The Wedding Bus after the ceremony.
This classic big red bus brought a sense of fun and nostalgia to the celebration. After the ceremony, everyone climbed aboard and we set off to explore the city together. Driving through the historic streets of Edinburgh in a vintage double-decker bus is an experience in itself. As we passed through the city, guests waved from the windows while tourists on the streets below cheered and smiled.
Moments like these are perfect for documentary-style photography. There’s a natural sense of joy and spontaneity that you simply can’t stage. Laughter fills the bus, conversations flow between seats, and the couple get to experience the city surrounded by their closest friends and family.
For couples planning a wedding or elopement in Edinburgh, incorporating something unique like this can make the day feel even more memorable.
A Relaxed and Family-Oriented Wedding
What stood out most about this wedding was how family-oriented and relaxed the day felt.
There was no rush, no pressure, and no elaborate schedule to follow. Instead, the day flowed naturally, with plenty of time for the couple to spend with the people closest to them.
Weddings like this always remind me why I love photographing smaller celebrations and intimate weddings in Scotland. When the focus shifts away from a big production and towards connection and presence, the emotions become more genuine. The smiles are more natural, the hugs last longer, and the entire day feels more personal.
From a storytelling perspective, this creates photographs that feel timeless and authentic.
Returning to The Edinburgh Grand
After exploring the city, the celebrations returned to The Edinburgh Grand. As the evening approached, the atmosphere shifted into something even more relaxed. Guests gathered together, sharing stories from the day and enjoying time with family members who had travelled from far and wide to be there.
The elegant interiors of the building created the perfect setting for an intimate reception. Soft lighting, beautiful architecture, and the buzz of conversation filled the space.
For me, this part of the day is always about capturing the small human moments.
Friends laughing over shared memories.
The couple finally sitting together and realising they’re married.
Aunts and uncles singing '500 miles' and dancing in a conga line.
These moments might seem small in the moment, but years later they often become the photographs couples treasure the most.
With luxurious spaces for getting ready, beautiful interiors for celebrations, and the entire city just outside the door, The Edinburgh Grand is an incredible place to begin your married life together. Whether you’re planning a refined family wedding, an intimate celebration, or a romantic elopement in Edinburgh, the city offers a setting that feels both historic and cinematic.
And when the focus is on connection, family, and genuine moments, the photographs become something truly meaningful.
Because at the heart of every wedding - no matter how big or small - is a story worth telling.
My Approach as a Scotland Wedding and Elopement Photographer
Every wedding is unique, but my approach always stays the same. I blend cinematic storytelling with documentary wedding photography, focusing on real interactions rather than staged moments. My goal is to capture the atmosphere of the day exactly as it felt through real, raw and intimate photography.
For couples planning a wedding or elopement in Scotland, this style works beautifully because the landscapes, architecture and natural light already create such an incredible setting. All that’s left is to document the emotion within it. Because when you look back at your wedding photographs years later, I don’t just want you to remember how the day looked. I want you to remember how it felt.
And that’s exactly why I always say:
I photograph feelings.
