A Fog-Drenched Fairytale: Scottish Wedding at Drumtochty Castle
Weddings at Scottish castles always carry a certain magic, but M & M’s wedding at Drumtochty Castle may forever hold the crown for the most atmospheric, cinematic day I’ve photographed.
Set deep within the forested glens of Aberdeenshire, Drumtochty Castle rises like something out of a gothic novel - towering stone, hidden pathways, rolling hills, and for this particular wedding…fog.
Thick, moody, storybook fog.

The Rehearsal Evening: Whisky, Pizza, and the Perfect Welcome
The festivities began the night before, when friends and family gathered in the castle grounds for a relaxed rehearsal evening that I got the opportunity to photograph. M & M wanted something that felt warm, communal, and distinctly Scottish - and they delivered.
A whisky expert guided guests through a Scottish whisky tasting, sharing stories behind different distilleries and notes. Guests hovered around barrels with drams in hand as the light faded behind the trees. A wood-fired pizza truck rolled in, filling the courtyard with the smell of basil, sourdough, and melting mozzarella. There was laughter, toasts, and the kind of easy joy that only comes when everyone knows something incredible is about to unfold the next day.
It was the perfect start - and a dream warm-up to document. As a documentary wedding photographer, evenings like this are gold. People relaxed, families catching up, pockets of conversation that help tell the fuller story of a wedding weekend.
A Castle with History, Heart, and Highlands Spirit
Before diving into the wedding day itself, it’s impossible not to mention the history woven into Drumtochty Castle. Built in the early 19th century, the castle is surrounded by acres of woodland, lochs, and rolling Scottish countryside. Once a private home, today it’s one of Scotland’s most sought-after exclusive-use wedding venues.
Inside, it’s all sweeping staircases, tall windows, and ornate details. Outside, it feels untouched - wild, romantic, and beautifully remote. For a couple like M & M, who adore Scotland’s folklore, moodiness, and natural landscapes, it was the perfect setting.
The Wedding Morning: Fog, Folklore, and a Little Help from a Witch
I arrived early on the wedding morning to find the castle wrapped in a thick blanket of fog. The kind of fog that softens everything - trees, towers, breath - into a muted, cinematic dreamscape. M met me at the door with a grin and whispered, "I paid a witch on Etsy for this weather.”
Whether coincidence, luck, or genuine spellwork, the atmosphere was unreal. Every frame felt like a scene from a movie - soft edges, muted colour palette, a gentle drizzle that clung to the air. As a photographer who leans heavily into cinematography-inspired composition, the conditions were honestly a gift.
Inside the castle rooms, both M & M got ready with their closest people. I switched fluidly between digital and film, capturing the contrast between the tactile nostalgia of film grain and the crisp detail of digital. Their morning was calm, intentional, and deeply rooted in connection.
The Ceremony at St Palladius
One of Drumtochty Castle’s charms is its charming little church on the estate - a short drive down a tree-lined road. The grey hued chapel sits tucked among the greenery like it’s been waiting for centuries for this exact purpose.
Soft fog curled around branches and the church steeple. It was hauntingly beautiful. Inside, the church glowed with soft, warm light. M & M exchanged vows in a ceremony that felt intimate, reverent, and timeless.
I photographed the ceremony quietly, focusing on real moments - hands reaching, tears forming, laughter bubbling at the edges. My documentary style is always about preserving the authenticity of a wedding day, and this one overflowed with emotion.
Portraits: Highland Wildlife, Falcons, and a Misty Loch
After the ceremony, we returned to the grounds for portraits, and this is where the day truly stepped into mythical territory.
First stop: the castle’s loch, where the fog drifted lazily across the water’s surface. M & M, framed by towering trees and diffuse Scottish light, looked like characters in an ancient folktale. Film photographs from this moment are some of my personal favourites - soft grain, ethereal tones, a sense of stillness.
Then came the falcons. Yes - actual falcons, eagles and owls. A local falconer met us on the grounds and guided M & M through holding and interacting with these incredible birds. The images are powerful, bold, and undeniably cinematic.
And finally…the Highland cows. Scotland’s beloved shaggy icons wandered over just close enough to join in the portraits. Their copper coats stood out beautifully against the misty backdrop, and M & M were over the moon.
Reception at Drumtochty Castle
The reception brought everyone back inside the warmth of the castle. Candlelit tables, sprawling floral arrangements, fireplaces crackling. Speeches were emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, and guests spilled through different rooms of the castle as the evening unfolded.
I shot the reception using a hybrid of digital clarity and dreamy film stock, leaning heavily into motion-filled storytelling - twirls on the dance floor, spilled champagne bubbles, embraces that lingered. My approach is always to photograph a wedding as though it were a movie set - capturing not just moments but mood, atmosphere, and movement.
As the night deepened, the fog outside thickened once again and rain continued to tumble down. Guests snuck out for fresh air and a glimpse at a stupendous firework display. The evening finished with grilled cheese sandwiches, dancing under twinkling lights, and the castle felt alive with celebration.
A Cinematic Love Story in the Highlands
M & M’s wedding at Drumtochty Castle was everything I love about Scottish weddings: atmospheric weather, historic venues, folklore and fun, wildlife roaming freely, and couples who embrace the dramatic beauty of the Highlands (and the weather).
For me as a documentary-style wedding photographer specialising in film and digital, this day was a dream canvas. The blend of moody light, mist-filled landscapes, and emotional storytelling allowed me to lean fully into my cinematography-driven style - creating images that feel as though they belong on a movie poster.
