A Photographer’s Guide to Edinburgh City Chamber's Ceremony Rooms

If you’re planning a wedding in the heart of Scotland’s capital, few venues are as iconic as Edinburgh City Chambers.

Located on the historic Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town, it’s one of the most popular places in the country for intimate weddings, elopements, and civil ceremonies. Couples travel from all over the world to get married here and after photographing many weddings at City Chambers myself, it’s easy to see why.

As a recommended supplier by the venue, I’ve had the privilege of photographing ceremonies in every room within the building. Each space has its own character, atmosphere, and story to tell.

My photography style is cinematic yet documentary, focused on capturing genuine moments as they unfold naturally and the City Chambers lends itself to capturing weddings and elopements like that. My motto is simple - 'I photograph feelings' and Edinburgh City Chambers is a place filled with them.

Why Get Married at Edinburgh City Chambers?

One of the biggest appeals of City Chambers is its versatility. You can have anything from a tiny elopement with just two witnesses to a grand ceremony surrounded by friends and family. Ceremonies take place regularly throughout the week, often scheduled throughout the day, making it a flexible option for couples travelling from abroad or planning a smaller wedding.

The building itself is stunning - grand staircases, historic interiors, and views across Edinburgh’s skyline create an incredible atmosphere before you even step into a ceremony room.

And from a photographer’s perspective, the surrounding area is a dream.

Within minutes you have:

  • The cobbled streets of the Royal Mile
  • The dramatic skyline of Edinburgh’s Old Town
  • Hidden closes and historic alleyways
  • The City Chambers courtyard itself

All of this creates endless opportunities for natural, cinematic photographs. But the real magic begins inside the ceremony rooms. So which one is the right one for you?

The Alexander Suite

The Alexander Suite is the most popular ceremony space at Edinburgh City Chambers. Located on the ground floor just inside the main entrance, it’s an intimate yet elegant room designed for smaller weddings. The ceremony room can host up to around 36 guests, making it perfect for couples who want a meaningful celebration with their closest family and friends.

One of the things I love most about the Alexander Suite is how thoughtfully the space flows. It includes:

  • A ceremony room
  • A waiting lounge for guests
  • A private room where couples meet the registrar before the ceremony

The guest lounge even overlooks Princes Street and Edinburgh’s New Town, giving the space a wonderful sense of place. The ceremony space is intimate, so couples are naturally closer to their guests and no emotion gets lost. You see reactions more clearly - nervous smiles, tears from parents, laughter between friends. These are the moments I’m always looking for.

My approach in spaces like the Alexander Suite is cinematic yet documentary in style. I don’t stage moments or interrupt what’s happening. Instead, I quietly observe and capture the real emotions as they unfold but of course, as it's a smaller space, I will be more noticeable. But I do my best to move quietly around so as not to disturb little moments like:

A glance between partners before the ceremony begins.

A parent squeezing their hand during the vows.

That first deep breath after the registrar announces you married.

These moments tell the real story of the day. And that’s exactly what I aim to preserve.

The European Room

For couples planning a slightly larger ceremony, the European Room is an elegant and spacious option. This room can accommodate around 70-80 guests, making it ideal for couples who want to celebrate with a larger group of family and friends.

The space itself is beautiful, with high ceilings, historic artwork, and large windows overlooking the courtyard. It has a wonderful sense of grandeur while still feeling intimate. It's carpet and chairs are blue, so bear that in mind if you have specific colours or styling in mind.

The natural light in this room is fantastic for photography. The partner facing the windows during the ceremony is often bathed in the best light.  As a photographer who loves a cinematic style, I often use the light and shadow contrast here to create images that feel dramatic Coupled with the artwork and architecture, the photographs in this space feel grand and timeless.

But while the room itself is stunning, the real story is always the people inside it. During ceremonies I’m constantly watching for small emotional moments:

  • The glance couples share during their vows
  • The reactions from friends and family
  • The laughter when something unexpected happens

These moments bring the photographs to life. As the space is larger, it's somewhat easier for me to move around unnoticed, so if this is important to you, you might consider this space!

The Council Chamber

For larger weddings, the Council Chamber is the most spectacular ceremony room in the building. Located on the upper floor of the venue, this room can host around 100 guests and feels incredibly grand.

The chamber features:

  • A dramatic domed ceiling
  • Historic murals and artwork
  • Beautiful architectural details
  • Stunning views across the city

It’s one of the most visually impressive ceremony spaces in Edinburgh. The walls are red, as are the chairs, so again, a colour to take into consideration if you have a strong aesthetic you're adhering to.

When photographing weddings here, I aim to balance the scale of the room with the intimacy of the moment. Wide shots capture the grandeur of the chamber and the atmosphere of the ceremony. But I’m equally focused on the quiet moments between the couple - the expressions, the nerves, the excitement. It's lovely to get behind the registrar with window light spilling on to both of you, as then I can capture intimate moments in perfect lighting, with the smiling faces of your guests behind you.

Because no matter how large the room is, the heart of the story is always the same.

Two people choosing each other.

The Wee Neuk

And finally, my favourite room. The smallest ceremony room at Edinburgh City Chambers. A room that is affectionately called The Wee Neuk.

This tiny space is designed for the couple and two witnesses only (plus me), making it ideal for elopements or very simple legal ceremonies.

Despite its size and simple decor, it’s one of the most emotional places I’ve photographed weddings. With so few people present, every moment feels incredibly meaningful. Some of the most powerful wedding photographs I’ve taken have come from ceremonies here.

There are no distractions. No large crowds. Just two people sharing one of the most important moments of their lives.

For a documentary photographer like me, this environment is perfect.

Every expression, every word, every smile becomes part of the story.

Being A Recommended Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding Photographer

Having photographed many weddings at Edinburgh City Chambers, I’ve come to know the venue incredibly well. And now, being listed as a recommended photographer by the venue means couples benefit from that experience.

I know:

  • How ceremonies typically flow
  • The best locations for portraits nearby
  • Where the best natural light appears around the building
  • How to capture beautiful photos quickly after the ceremony

I even know how to cajole strangers off the street into being your witnesses (if you're eloping and need one!).

This experience and knowledge allows you to relax and enjoy their day, knowing everything is taken care of. I've got you, I promise!

You've Picked Your Room, Now It's Time to Pick Me...

Getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers is a truly special experience. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a larger ceremony with friends and family, the venue offers beautiful spaces and an unforgettable setting in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town.

And when the ceremony ends, you step straight outside into one of the most photogenic cities in the world. But who is wielding that camera alongside you?

Every photographer has a different approach. My style blends cinematic storytelling with documentary photography.

That means I don’t interrupt the day or stage moments. Instead, I focus on capturing what’s already happening - the real interactions, emotions, and connections between people. Because the most meaningful photographs are rarely posed.

They’re the ones filled with genuine feeling.
