Archerfield House, tucked along the golden coastline of East Lothian, is one of those rare places. M & F’s wedding here was the perfect blend of relaxed celebration and understated luxury, and as a documentary wedding photographer specialising in film and digital, it was a dream to capture their day in a natural, story-driven way.
Their wedding unfolded slowly, emotionally, and with the kind of ease that only comes from choosing a venue that truly feels like home. From morning prep in the sunlit suites to windswept portraits along the Archerfield estate, the entire day was an invitation to document love without artifice.

The morning of the wedding was calm, warm, and softly lit - the kind of light 35mm film absolutely adores. F & M each got ready surrounded by close friends and family, music playing, glasses clinking, and the gentle bustle of anticipation filling the air.
As a documentary photographer, mornings like these are pure gold. Nothing needs to be orchestrated. It’s all about reading the room, finding pockets of emotion, and quietly photographing the moments that will matter in ten, twenty, fifty years:
- A bridesmaid steaming the veil while humming along to the playlist
- The groom’s father carefully folding a pocket square
- M pausing by the window, taking one slow breath before stepping into her dress
Film captured the softness of the morning - the satin textures, the champagne bubbles, the warmth of the Archerfield interiors - while digital allowed for cinematic, luminous portraits and the capture of quick, fleeting moments.
A Ceremony Filled With Light, Laughter & Heart
Their ceremony took place on the estate grounds, framed by rolling lawns and long summer grasses swaying in the seaside breeze. The atmosphere was effortlessly elegant - no over-styling, no unnecessary fuss - just honest emotion in a breathtaking setting.
F & M exchanged vows surrounded by their closest people, with sunlight catching the edges of the flowers and a soft salt tainted wind drifting in from the shore. It was relaxed, romantic, and deeply them. And yes, I did cry.
These are the moments that documentary photography thrives on:
- A hand squeeze
- A tear quickly brushed away
- A laugh shared before the vows are even finished
Every gesture tells part of the story.
Laid-Back Luxury: Drinks, Music & Golden Light
After the ceremony, guests continued to lounge and relax on the lawn for champagne and hors d'oeuvres. Spicy margaritas were served as the couple's favourite. Children ran in the grass and drank sugary cokes. Friends lounged on benches and garden furniture. There was a softness to everything - an ease that comes from a couple who truly planned a wedding that reflects who they are.
I moved quietly through the crowd, capturing little moments that build the heart of a gallery:
- Friends draping arms around each other
- Sunlight flaring through glasses
- Forehead kisses to a new wife
This part of the day is where documentary photography shines: authentic, unscripted, beautifully imperfect moments.
Portraits on the Estate: 35mm Film at Its Best
Archerfield’s grounds are incredibly photogenic - a blend of manicured elegance and wild Scottish landscape. For portraits, we wandered down round the grounds in the afternoon and in the evening we ventured down to the coastline, where the grass meets the sand, and Fidra Lighthouse stands quietly in the distance. Summer weddings allow for this, double portrait opportunities with two different lights, and I love that chance to be creative in different settings with different glows from the sun.
Using 35mm film here was a deliberate choice. Film brings depth and emotion to outdoor landscapes, rendering skin tones and sea-air colours with soft, timeless beauty. The wind lifted M’s veil, F pulled her close, and the two of them simply existed together - no posing, no pressure, just presence.
Digital frames ensured cinematic detail, while film frames delivered the nostalgic, editorial softness that has become signature to my work as a film and digital wedding photographer.
Dinner, Candlelight & an Evening Full of Heart
The reception was held in Archerfield’s beautifully styled event space, filled with candlelight, purple hued lighting, and cute personal details from the couple. Speeches were emotional, hilarious, and full of love - the kind that give you a new appreciation for the people in the room. The DJ had everyone sing karaoke en masse. It was fun and frivolous, exactly as a wedding evening should be.
These evening frames always become some of the most treasured - grainy, intimate, honest. When the DJ began his official setlist, the room moved as one. The dance floor pulsed with energy, and guests truly let go. This is where documentary photography becomes pure storytelling: motion, joy, sweat, rhythm, and connection.
