An Intimate Wedding Photographed in a Cinematic, Documentary-Style

There are some wedding days that feel like they were made for cinema - soft, whimsical, romantic, and full of gentle movement. J & T’s relaxed celebration at Dunglass Estate was exactly that kind of day.

As a documentary-style wedding photographer specialising in both 35mm film and digital, Dunglass is one of those rare Scottish venues that allows you to tell a story with pure atmosphere: shifting coastal light, incredible historic architecture, and a sense of calm woven through every moment.

This wedding had all the elements of a romantic modern fairytale — trees swaying in the breeze, the slight chill of autumn, flickering candlelit interiors, and two people deeply present with each other. From the slow, tender morning to the dance floor glowing beneath fairy lights, the entire day unfolded with effortless charm.

Why Dunglass Estate Is a Dream for Cinematic Weddings

Situated along the East Lothian coastline, Dunglass Estate is known for its wild beauty and historic soul. The 15th-century Gothic church ruins, soft woodland paths, and elegant courtyard house create a unique blend of drama and intimacy - making it one of Scotland’s most enchanting wedding venues.

For couples who want a wedding that feels:

  • relaxed
  • natural
  • romantic
  • slightly whimsical
  • and beautifully cinematic

Dunglass Estate delivers on all fronts. Its changing light, open landscapes, and crumbling stone textures make it an exceptional place for creating cinematic imagery, where atmosphere becomes part of the story.

A Soft, Dreamy Morning in the Seaview House

J began her morning in Seaview House, surrounded by sunlight, laughter, and the gentle rustling of dresses and ribbons. The space is bright and warm - perfect for natural, documentary-style photography. I shot much of the morning on a mixture of 35mm film and digital, letting the softness of the film grain capture the calmness of the room:

  • chickens running loose and honesty box egg stands
  • a wedding shining in the last of the summer light
  • satin shoes placed beside wildflower bouquets

As a documentary style inclined photographer, I thrive in these quiet, anticipatory moments. It’s less about perfection and more about feeling - something that suits weddings like J & T's beautifully.

Meanwhile, T was getting ready nearby, surrounded by family and friends and the kind of relaxed, steady energy that anchors a wedding morning. I documented wedding haircuts, handwritten vows, subtle nerves, and plenty of laughter - all unposed, all real.

They spoke private vows to one another at a secret first look, that I got the joy of capturing from a distance so as to allow them their moment.

A Ceremony Among Ancient Stone & Wild Grass

Dunglass Estate’s semi-ruined church is unlike any ceremony space in Scotland. It’s ancient, peaceful, and filled with filtered natural light that shifts with the clouds. J walked down the aisle accompanied by both her mum and dad, birdsong, and a soft breeze moving through the open arches.

Their ceremony was emotional, intimate, and filled with tiny moments that make documentary photography so meaningful. The space itself feels cinematic - every texture, every shadow, every breeze adding depth to the photographs. Switching between digital and film allowed me to capture both crisp detail and atmospheric softness.

Confetti, Champagne & A Relaxed Garden Gathering

After the ceremony, guests poured into the courtyard where champagne was shared and delicious canapés eaten in a relaxed and jubilant atmosphere. A baby decided he's had enough of his kilt, friends lounged on benches, and the couple floated through it all with joy that felt effortlessly contagious. This part of the day is where documentary photography truly thrives. It’s unscripted, honest, and deeply human. These are the frames that bring a wedding gallery to life - the 'in between' moments that reveal how a day felt rather than just how it looked.

Cinematic Portraits Among Ruins & Meadow Grass

Dunglass Estate offers an extraordinary range of portrait locations without ever feeling posed or staged. J & T wanted portraits that felt natural and cinematic - not stiff, not overly styled, just the two of them moving through the landscape as themselves. Using a Blackmist Filter on my lens for portraits gave the images a dreamlike quality - gentle grain, soft colours, and a nostalgic warmth that pure digital can’t quite replicate. The movement of  J’s veil in the wind, the way T brushed her cheek, the drifting coastal air - all of it translated beautifully.

A Candlelit Dinner Filled With Laughter & Emotion

As evening settled in, guests moved into the reception space, glowing with candlelight, and autumnal coloured florals that continued the whimsical theme. Speeches were heartfelt - full of love and the kind of storytelling that makes everyone in the room feel closer.

This is where I leaned heavily into cinematic lighting, mixing ambient candlelight with gentle flash on film:

  • warm reflections dancing across glassware
  • hands held tightly during emotional moments
  • napkins pressed to faces mid-laughter
  • deep, rich tones that only a low-light film frame can give

It felt like documenting a scene from a romantic film - warm, emotional, atmospheric.

Dancing Under the Stars

As darkness deepened, festoon lights flickered on and the dance floor came alive. We Are Tartan got the guests riled up on the dance floor pumping out Scottish anthems like'500 miles'. Guests danced barefoot, friends linked arms and filmed on retro video cameras, and J & T jumped around the dance floor in a mad ecstasy. These frames became some of my favourites - raw joy, movement, music, and connection captured in its truest form.
