A Warm, Cinematic Summer Wedding at Winton Castle
Nestled just outside Edinburgh, Winton Castle is one of Scotland’s most enchanting wedding venues - historic yet welcoming, grand yet intimate, and beautifully surrounded by rolling countryside.
K & J chose Winton Castle for its warmth, its heritage, and its ability to bring people together in a relaxed, joyful environment. Their summer wedding was filled with glowing light, laughter drifting through the gardens, and the kind of easy connection that makes documentary photography truly shine.
As a documentary-style wedding photographer specialising in real, intimate, and cinematic imagery, this day felt like storytelling perfection - from the early morning preparations to the evening's frivolities.
K & J Winton Castle Wedding - May 2025
The History of Winton Castle
Winton Castle dates back to the 17th century and was originally designed by the famed Scottish architect Sir William Bruce. The castle blends Renaissance elegance with a lived-in charm: intricate plasterwork, sweeping staircases, panelled rooms, and peaceful gardens that seem to stretch endlessly into the East Lothian landscape.
The castle’s motto, “Intus ut libet, foris ut moris est” ('within, follow your inclinations; outside, observe custom'), reflects exactly what it offers a wedding day - freedom, warmth, and beautiful tradition. K & J were drawn to Winton Castle for its sense of history without rigidity. A place where guests could relax, explore, and feel completely at home.
The Wedding Morning: Sunshine, Calm, and Quiet Joy
I arrived early on the wedding morning to find the castle glowing in the soft summer light and just a little drizzle of rain (as is standard on Scottish summer days). Sun warmed the stone walls, the gardens hummed gently with bees, and there was an immediate sense of calm. Inside, K & J were getting ready in separate rooms, both filled with the familiar hum of anticipation - friends laughing, dresses being carefully unzipped from garment bags, ties being knotted in front of tall windows.
As a documentary wedding photographer, mornings like this are my favourite. No staging, no interrupting - just observing the realness of the moment. I photographed the details on film to capture their texture, warmth, and nostalgia: sunlight catching on beaded fabric, bouquets resting on old wooden tables, handwritten vows tucked into pockets.
Digital images allowed me to document candid interactions: parents seeing their daughter dressed for the first time, bridesmaids sharing excited glances, quiet moments of reflection. The blend of film and digital created a layered, cinematic story that felt alive.
A Ceremony Filled With Light and Emotion
The ceremony took place in one of Winton Castle’s grand central rooms as the rain hadn't quite managed to let up enough. Soft daylight streamed in through tall windows and danced across the historic plasterwork. The warm wood tones of the room created an intimate, enveloping glow - perfect for the relaxed, emotional atmosphere K & J wanted.
I photographed the ceremony unobtrusively, staying close enough to catch real emotion without disrupting the flow. Every moment - K's unending focus on J, J squeezing her hand, their guests smiling through happy tears - was captured candidly. This is what documentary style is all about; finding the truth in small gestures, the beauty in authenticity.
Shooting partly on film during the ceremony gave the images a softness and depth that suited the castle’s historic setting beautifully, while digital allowed me to capture fleeting expressions with precision.
Relaxed Drinks on the Lawn and Candid Moments in the Sun
After the ceremony, the gardens came alive with laughter as guests spilled out onto the lawns. The summer warmth wrapped everyone in a golden haze that made every interaction feel cinematic. K & J's young son ran across the grass, glasses clinked, and conversation drifted under the trees.
These in-between moments - unposed, unfiltered, joyful - are the heart of my work. I moved quietly among the group, capturing real life as it unfolded: spontaneous hugs, storytelling circles, the couple being pulled into embraces by loved ones, sunlight catching on champagne bubbles. It was relaxed, carefree, and utterly delightful to photograph.
Cinematic Portraits in the Winton Gardens
For K & J’s portraits, we took a gentle walk through the gardens at Winton Castle and down to the lake. Summer weddings at Winton Castle are a dream the light is soft, the greenery lush, and the castle towers majestically behind every path. The wisteria was coming to the end of it's bloom but it still photographed beautifully.
Rather than stiff posing, I encouraged movement as I knew K & J were less than comfortable being on camera: walking hand in hand, leaning into each other, sharing quiet moments away from the crowd. My goal is always to make couples feel comfortable and present, letting their natural connection lead the images.
On film, the portraits have a nostalgic romance - creamy tones, gentle grain, warmth in every frame. On digital, the colours pop: golden sunlight, vibrant gardens, bright reflections on stone. Together they create a story that feels both timeless and modern.
Some of my favourite portraits came from a moments where I wasn't looking for a specific shot at all, just real glances and conversations. Simple, honest, intimate - everything I love about real, candid, documentary wedding photography.
After, back inside the castle, the reception was filled with speeches that had everyone laughing, crying, or both. The castle’s dining hall glowed with candlelight and the hum of conversation. Guests relaxed deeply into the evening, lending the entire celebration that effortless, lived-in quality that makes Winton Castle such a special wedding venue.
Why Winton Castle Is Perfect for Relaxed, Documentary-Style Weddings
K & J’s summer wedding was a reminder of why Winton Castle remains one of my favourite Scottish venues. It offers grandeur without stiffness, elegance without formality. A place where couples can breathe, be themselves, and let their story unfold naturally.
For couples who value real moments, intimate storytelling, candid interactions, and a relaxed atmosphere, Winton is the perfect match - and I adore photographing weddings that embody this kind of authenticity.
